Ingredients

For the French Toast:

  • 1 loaf brioche bread

  • 6 eggs

  • ½ cup whole milk

  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon cardamom

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • Pinch of salt

For the Cardamom Maple Syrup:

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter

  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon cardamom

  • ½ teaspoon orange zest

Directions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Cut the brioche bread into ½ to 1-inch chunks. Preheat the oven to 350ºF and grease a 2-quart casserole dish with butter or cooking spray.

  2. Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cardamom, baking powder, and salt. Add in the bread and gently stir to coat it completely. Transfer the mixture to the prepared casserole dish.

  3. Make the Maple Syrup: In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the maple syrup, cardamom, and orange zest. Drizzle the syrup over the French toast casserole, coating it evenly.

  4. Bake: Bake the casserole uncovered for 40–50 minutes until the edges are golden brown and the center is cooked through. Use a thermometer to ensure the center reaches 160ºF.

  5. Serve: Serve with fresh fruit, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream for an extra touch.
