Ingredients
-
2 tablespoons butter
-
1 onion, finely chopped
-
2 teaspoons (about 2 cloves) minced garlic
-
1 lb. fresh tomatoes (peeled, seeded, and chopped) or 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
-
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil (or 1 teaspoon dried basil)
-
1 ½ teaspoons chopped fresh oregano (or ½ teaspoon dried oregano)
-
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
¼ teaspoon pepper
Directions
-
In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add the onion and cook, stirring, for about 3-5 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
-
Stir in the tomatoes and reduce the heat to medium-low. Add basil, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper.
-
Simmer, partially covered, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens (about 10-15 minutes).
-
Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings as needed.
-
If using fresh tomatoes, puree the sauce with a handheld blender or in a food processor until smooth. If using canned tomatoes, skip this step.
-
Serve with pasta, pizza, or any dish that calls for marinara sauce.
