Easy Gamja Jorim (Korean Braised Potatoes)

Gamja Jorim (Korean Braised Potatoes) is a simple, quick, and utterly delicious side dish that will leave you craving more. Tender baby potatoes are first boiled to perfection, then pan-fried and braised in a sweet, savory, and slightly spicy sauce. This dish is an essential part of any Korean banchan (side dish) spread and pairs wonderfully with a bowl of steamed rice. It’s easy to prepare, full of flavor, and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lbs baby potatoes

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (or any neutral oil)

  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

  • Green onions, for garnish

For the Sauce:

  • ¼ cup soy sauce

  • 3 tbsp honey (or your choice of sweetened syrup)

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) or red pepper flakes (optional)

  • ½ cup water

Directions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a bowl, combine soy sauce, honey, minced garlic, Gochugaru (if using), and water. Mix well.

  2. Boil the Potatoes: Add salt and vinegar to a pot of boiling water. Add the potatoes and cook on medium-low heat for 10–15 minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside.

  3. Pan-Fry the Potatoes: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the boiled potatoes and fry for about 5 minutes until golden brown on all sides.

  4. Simmer in Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the potatoes and simmer until the sauce thickens, stirring frequently for an even coating.

  5. Finish and Serve: Turn off the heat and stir in sesame seeds. Garnish with chopped green onions. Serve immediately and enjoy!
